How I Make Money Blogging Managing Your Monthly Nut

February 2012 Blog Statistics and Income Update

Quick review since I know some of you only tune in for this monthly peek, lol. I started Budgeting in the Fun Stuff in February 2010, started Crystal-For-Hire Blog Advertising Services in April 2011, started working from home in July 2011, and Mr. BFS joined me at home in January 2012. WOOT!!! I have never worked harder in my life, but WOOT!!!

Yep, it’s been crazy busy here. Hubby and I need at least $10,000 a month to cover expenses, basic savings, and taxes. But we are aiming for $15,000 a month so we can pay off our mortgage by June 2012, build up our emergency fund even more, and invest lots and lots for our future since I have no idea how long this can really last.

I figured the best way to keep my eye on the prize is to hit monthly targets, so I started posting here towards the end of 2010. Between that and the fact there seems to be major interest in the subject, I started an update of my blogging stats and income around the 1st of every month.

Here the goals for February 2012 followed by the results:

  • Alexa Ranking: 36,000 / 36,825  (close but no cigar)
  • Visits: 22,000 / 17,687  (I forgot to take into account the shorter month)
  • Unique Visitors: 16,000 / 12,672
  • Pageviews: 38,000 / 30,038
  • RSS subscribers: 1050 /1060  (woot!)
  • Twitter followers: 1250 /1237  (so close)
  • Newsletter subscribers:  new category / 197  (thanks!)
  • Traffic breakdown: 7000 from Referring Sites (4474), 4000 from Direct Traffic (2596), 10,000 from Search Engines (9412), 1000 from Other (1205)
  • Online Income: $15,000 / $17,425.33

Monthly Income Breakdown

  • Advertising on BFS: $1949.12
  • Advertising on My Other Blogs: $1845.00
  • Writing (Freelancing): $50.00
  • Blogging Services (Running advertising on other sites and freelance tasks): $13,581.21

We had $1824.61 in expenses as well (which included $1244.61 in Paypal fees), our basic expenses, and blog empire expansion. That came to 10.47% in expenses. If you’d like to see our exact blogging expenses breakdown for this month, check out How I Make Money Blogging. We have been attempting to keep them at 15% or less of our overall income. That said, our net profit this month before a third goes to taxes was $15,600.72

Not as great as the past few months, but not bad at all for a shorter month that also started out as slow as a sloth.  And we hit our goal!!!  This is the first full month that Mr. BFS has been working from home with me, so we were really, really, really hoping to hit our $15,000 goal.  Yay!!!  :-)

Goals for March:

  • Alexa Ranking: 36,000
  • Visits: 22,000
  • Unique Visitors: 16,000
  • Pageviews: 38,000
  • RSS subscribers: 1150

  • Traffic breakdown: 7000 from Referring Sites, 4000 from Direct Traffic, 10,000 from Search Engines, 1000 from Other
  • Online Income: $15,000

Any questions, comments, or advice? As I mentioned, I go into more detail with my income and expenses on the 1st of the month at http://howimakemoneyblogging.com/, but feel free to ask anything you’d like at either site!!!

December 2011 Blog Statistics and Income Update PLUS 2011 Annual Totals

It was the best month yet!!!  Whoo-hoo for a crazy 3 weeks and a little time off too!!!

I wanted to blog full time by 2012. To reach that goal, I thought I needed a bunch of traffic on all of my blogs. Specifically, I was aiming for 25,000 unique visitors a month at BFS by August 2011 and needed to be making $30,000 a year total by 2012.  Well, there was a change of plans. I literally got too busy with my online work to keep my day job, so I quit as of July 15th, 2011! Self-employment is rocking so far!

I figured the best way to keep my eye on the prize is to hit monthly targets, so I started posting here. Between that and the fact there seems to be major interest in the subject, I started an update around the 1st of every month of my blogging stats and income generated. I’ll also do a huge 1 year update at the beginning of every January.

Here were my goals for December 2011 followed by the results:

  • Alexa Ranking: 32,500 / 36,938 (inching up…)
  • Visits: 19,000 / 16,994 (holiday month…I think I shot too high)
  • Unique Visitors: 15,000 /13,348
  • Pageviews: 30,000 /25,074
  • RSS subscribers: 800 /650
  • Twitter followers: 1000 /1070
  • Traffic breakdown: 7000 from Referring Sites (3548), 3000 from Direct Traffic (2304), 8000 from Search Engines (10,363), 1000 from Other (779)
  • Blogging Income: $10,000 / $24,880.95 (Seriously, I danced a freaking jig, double-checked, and danced again!!!)

Monthly Income Breakdown

  • Advertising on BFS: $3542.39
  • Advertising on My Other Blogs: $1605.00
  • Writing (Staff Writing and Freelancing): $410.00
  • Blogging Services (Running advertising on other sites and freelance tasks): $19,323.56

I had $2596.64 in expenses as well which included $921.97 in Paypal fees, my basic expenses, and blog empire expansion.  That came to 10% in expenses.  If you’d like to see my exact blogging expenses breakdown for this month, check out How I Make Money Blogging. I have been attempting to keep them at 15% or less of my overall income. That said, my net profit this month before taxes was $22,284.31.  WHOO-HOO!!!

As I mentioned at the start, my traffic was down this month due to the holidays and because I stopped commenting as much.  But December is awesome for blog advertising!!!  Every advertiser contact seemed to have an end-of-year budget that needed to be spent!  I am still so glad I quit my day job!!!

In the meantime, I am paying myself $3575 a month / $1650 every 2 weeks (a third of that goes to taxes…), so I better darn well keep bringing in at least that. The extra money is currently being divided up with 75% going to our mortgage and 25% going towards investments – we’ve suspended extra additions to our fun money and vacation accounts until the mortgage is completely paid off, which may happen in less than 6 months at this rate!

My goals for January:

  • Alexa Ranking: 35,000
  • Visits: 19,000
  • Unique Visitors: 15,000
  • Pageviews: 30,000
  • RSS subscribers: 800
  • Twitter followers: 1250
  • Traffic breakdown: 7000 from Referring Sites, 3000 from Direct Traffic, 8000 from Search Engines, 1000 from Other
  • Blogging Income: $10,000

2011 Totals

Total Online Income from 2011:  $99,334.14
Total Expenses from 2011:  $15,201.74 (15.3%)
Net Profit from 2011 before taxes:  $84,132.40

Any questions, comments, or advice? As I mentioned, I go into more detail with my income and expenses on the 1st of the month at http://howimakemoneyblogging.com/, but feel free to ask anything you’d like at either site!!!

November 2011 Blog Statistics and Income Update

It has been a slower month than normal, but holidays can do that.  I appreciated the few days that were lighter than normal with emails, but I hope it picks up soon.

I wanted to blog full time by 2012. To reach that goal, I thought I needed a bunch of traffic on all of my blogs. Specifically, I was aiming for 25,000 unique visitors a month at BFS by August 2011 and needed to be making $30,000 a year total by 2012.

Between that and the fact there seems to be major interest in the subject, I started an update around the 1st of every month of my blogging stats and income generated. I’ll also do a huge 1 year update at the beginning of every January.

Here were my goals for November 2011 followed by the results:

  • Alexa Ranking: 31,000 /33,185
  • Visits: 19,000 /17,928
  • Unique Visitors: 15,000 /14,174
  • Pageviews: 30,000 /27,946
  • RSS subscribers: 800 /753
  • Twitter followers: 1000 /939
  • Traffic breakdown: 7000 from Referring Sites (3660), 3000 from Direct Traffic (2167), 8000 from Search Engines (11,270), 1000 from Other (832)
  • Total Gross Income: $10,000 / $10,786.07

Monthly Income Breakdown

  • Advertising on BFS: $905.22
  • Advertising on My Other Blogs: $1644.37
  • Writing (Staff Writing and Freelance Posts): $300.00
  • Blogging Services (Running advertising on other sites and freelance tasks): $7936.48

I had $589.22 in expenses as well since I had to pay $269.22 in Paypal fees and I had my basic expenses as well.  But I didn’t buy any new sites, so yay for less than 6% in expenses this month!!!  If you’d like to see my exact blogging expenses breakdown for this month, check out How I Make Money Blogging. I have been attempting to keep them at 15% or less of my overall income. That said, my net profit this month before taxes was $10,196.85.

As I mentioned at the start, my traffic was down this month due to the holidays and because I stopped commenting as much.  So for December, I am going to keep my same goals and see if I can power through another holiday month or not.  We’ll see.  Either way, I am so glad I quit my day job!!!

Seeing that I hit my self-employment goal much earlier than expected, I am now making goals to get my traffic up and my income stabilized. I hit my traffic goals, but I will still be focusing on content since BFS keeps me sane.

In the meantime, I am paying myself $3575 a month / $1650 every 2 weeks (a third of that goes to taxes…), so I better darn well keep bringing in at least that. The extra money is currently being divided up with 75% going to our mortgage and 25% going towards investments – we’ve suspended extra additions to our fun money and vacation accounts.

My goals for December:

  • Alexa Ranking: 32,500
  • Visits: 19,000
  • Unique Visitors: 15,000
  • Pageviews: 30,000
  • RSS subscribers: 800
  • Twitter followers: 1000
  • Traffic breakdown: 7000 from Referring Sites, 3000 from Direct Traffic, 8000 from Search Engines, 1000 from Other
  • Blogging Income: $10,000

Any questions, comments, or advice? As I mentioned, I go into more detail with my income and expenses on the 1st of the month at http://howimakemoneyblogging.com/, but feel free to ask anything you’d like at either site!!!
