When I was a kid, the coolest thing about weekends was that there might be sleepovers. I also remember that most of the best sleepovers ever included ghost stories.
There’s just something about a creepy story that made the night feel special. My heart would be racing but I’d feel like the other girls and I were now part of an elite group that would stick together when those invisible monsters attacked. In reality, we’d all be running and throwing each other back at the creature most probably, but at least we felt like a bonded clan.
The best scary story ever as a kid was told by my friend’s dad. We were outside and all the lights were off except his flashlight. He told us a werewolf story while holding the flashlight under his chin. The scariest part was when he started making a face that really did look like he was turning into a toothy creature. All of us screamed like the little girls we were and talked about it and other spooky stories all night.
Thinking about all of this, I wonder why adults don’t continue having sleepovers? I still think it would be a ton of fun to eat junk food and hang out until the wee hours of the morning. I even have better ghost stories now then when I was a kid. It helps when you start hearing of “real” encounters that your friends have had.
For example, one of my friends was cleaning her grandfather’s house by herself a few months after he passed away. To this day, she swears that mere seconds after she finished vacuuming the living room, she turned around and saw what looked like the imprints of slippered feet pressed down into the carpet in an area that was spotless before…and she wasn’t wearing any shoes. See, creepy, right?
How about you? Any great ghost story memories? Any good stories to tell?

HAHAHAHA That literally gave me the chills!!!!
I do not have any great stories to tell at all unfortunately. However, I do think it would be great to still have sleepovers into adulthood. Actually, when I first started working, one of my coworkers did host them about every month or so. Then people started having kids and such, and all that came to an end!
Great post, I could see you girl in the tent and a dad with a flashlight telling the story!
Your idea sounds like a great one! Have a “Why Not” slumber party! I get at least half of the women that you would probably come! Make it a theme oriented one!
Hmmm, ghost stories, let me thing! I’ve been in houses that were old and got chills before in certain rooms that made me wonder, but perhaps that’s my imagination gone wild
Holly, that’s awesome! I was hoping to get someone with it. That’s definitely the creepiest story I ever heard from anyone and she swears it’s true.
The weird thing is that her and her family live in that house now since her grandpa left it to her for being his caretaker…I’m not sure if I would stay there with stuff like that happening…
Everyday Tips, if we ever meet, we are totally doing a slumber party, lol!
Money Reasons, I’m really thinking about it. The trick is finding friends that would be willing to sleep over…the older we get, the less anybody seems to want to sleep away from their own bed.
See, I’ve never had a personal spooky experience – not even chilly rooms – but I think it would be really cool…I’m trying to get some friends together to do a haunted tour of Houston, but I seem to have a bunch of flaky and broke friends…
Funny you mention the ghost stories topic. Around Halloween, I told my 6-year old daughter a Halloween story. Then, she kept asking for a story, a few times a week. Each time, she wanted a new one. We ultimately got to at least 30 or more stories – with a witch, Dracula, Frankenstein, and a whole host of other character – and she would then ask me to repeat them. This went on until about a month ago. There were times I just didn’t want to go through a 10-minute story, but I did anyway. Now, she has stopped asking…and I want her to ask me again! Hope she hasn’t outgrown them!
Squirrelers, I hope she didn’t grow out of them either! I’m 27 and the spooky spirit is still going strong. Maybe you could tell her you thought of a new story in a little while and she’ll remember how much she liked them all…
Ooh we have some excellent family ghosts! I’ll have to share soon.
Revanche, I really can’t wait. I love hearing about personal encounters!
