Fit in a Fun Friday – Karaoke

I know, I know…some of you saw the title and cringed.  BUT, karaoke is a ton of fun!

Whether you are the one singing or not, just being in a karaoke club will make you smile. If you can sing, you can be a star. If you can’t, you can either be the center of attention anyway or sit back and enjoy the show like me.

Watching my fellow denizens trying so hard to mimic country-western stars or even rappers is always worth a laugh. Butchered songs are actually a lot of fun unless the singer seems embarrassed. I always cringe on the inside for somebody who is insecure and sincerely clap the loudest when they’re done since it takes guts to get up there.

Every once in a while a truly talented person takes the stage and takes my breath away. Great music is joyous. It can make a bad day fade away. Getting lost in the beat and words of a great song is some of the best therapy around. Those few minutes with a talented singer onstage will get you hooked.

I haven’t personally stepped up yet, but I will. As soon as I know a song well enough to feel like I won’t butcher it, I’ll get up there. I do not remember lyrics well or pay attention to the details like I should, so it just may be a while…

Do you karaoke? Are you more of a singer or an audience member? What’s your favorite karaoke song? I need some ideas, lol.

  • Karaoke is def a great way to de-stress after a long week. I’m not so much a singer, more of an active audience member. I’ve been up a few times but I try to keep a low profile :) My rule of thumb though is the bigger the group the better – nothing like a group of your peers embarrassing themselves on stage to make you feel better ;p. It’s an activity that lets you go out, have some laughs, maybe a drink or two and won’t break the bank.

Nunzio, that group idea sounds great! I need to talk my friends into going!

  • How fun!

I don’t karaoke but my daughter does, she sounds incredible cute!

I think the song that I hear the most is “Since you been gone” by Kelly Clarkson!

Money Reasons, “Since You’ve Been Gone” is a good one! I can just imagine how much noise my dad heard with three of us girls and mom…oy.

  • I have never participated in karaoke, I must be in a small group of people my age that have bypassed this pastime. If I had any talent whatsoever, I would be up there. I do have fun, to a point, at watching others botch songs – as long as they know they’re horrible and can share laughs with everyone.

I have heard Whitney Houston’s “I will always love you” song (I think that’s the title) a number of times, and nobody can get it anywhere close to decent. It’s funny. Speaking of that, you should check out the youtube video of the kid who sings this song. It’s a boy who actually sounds way better than Whitney at her own song. And he’s not a native English speaker, which makes it even more impressive.

Squirrelers, that kid was amazing! I love that song but I’d never be silly enough to try it in public. :-) Thanks for suggesting the You Tube video though!

  • It’s a kick, isn’t it? A friend has a Karaoke game you can play on your computer–I think it’s from Wii. She broke it out for a party and we had great fun!

Funny about Money, I didn’t know the Wii had a karaoke game! Cool beans. I’ve been using our Wii to stream the X-Files from Netflix, lol.

  • I am terrified to karaoke! I am a terrible singer, and I wouldn’t want to subject anyone to my singing, no matter how much anyone has had to drink.

I have to say, I can handle karaoke, as long as I don’t have to listen to New York, New York anymore!

Let us know when you hit the stage!!

Everyday Tips, are you really a bad singer or just one of those people who say they suck and then kick my butt? :-)

Oh, and I have yet to hear New York, New York, so maybe Texas karaoke is for you, lol. I’ll let you know if I sing on the cruise but it’s highly doubtful since I got over my cold but still have the cough…sigh…
