Fit in a Fun Friday – New Year’s Celebrations

I love the end of the year because Mr. BFS and I have a 6 year and growing tradition of board gaming in the New Year with friends.  icon smile Fit in a Fun Friday – New Year’s Celebrations

Every New Year’s weekend (Thursday – Sunday), we end up driving down to a board gaming convention that takes place on the south side of Houston.  Try to visualize 60-75 gamers around 15-20 tables in a nice hotel’s conference room.  We mill around, chat, hold contests, and board game for 3 1/2 days every year.

As you’re reading this, I’m chilling in the hotel and probably still nibbling on continental breakfast leftovers, lol.

Honestly, my husband drools at the idea of gaming for 20 hours straight, but I’m a fan of the chatting and meeting new people angle.  We actually stay in the hotel for the few nights instead of driving home, so we are in the thick of things the whole time.

Mr. BFS will go from one game to the next all day and night and I’ll hang with the people in between games, go out to eat with each of the groups that head out, and even throw my hat into the ring for karaoke night next door.  I’ll also play 2-3 board games a day and keep up with my online life.  I just like having a long weekend to be free from our normal responsibilities.  icon smile Fit in a Fun Friday – New Year’s Celebrations

Tonight we’ll do a quick countdown, toast our sodas, and return to our games.  Please be safe on the roads if you are out and about.  I wish you all the best for 2011!

How do you celebrate the New Year?  Any traditions you enjoy?

  • Wow, what a great tradition, sound like you and the hubby have a blast! Pretty cool he’s into the gaming and you’re into the mingling and singing. Does this mean you the blogging machine will be taking a few days off? Impossible? :) Happy New Year!

  • Haha, I LOVE it! My wife and I are actually planning on taking out the board games tonight as well, but I had no idea there were conventions for these things!

I think I might just have to look into that for the future! :)

  • Hey, Happy New Year Crystal! Wish you the best of the best for 2011! The tradition not for so long though is 31st at an hotel with the spouse family and friends. We’re having diner, dance and all sleep there so no danger of late accidents… January 1st is my father’s birthday so we get along and celebrate both events. As you know a little more about me, I can tell you than my New Year will be just awesome! I’ll give you more details in a bit, but I am all excited! Cheers!

  • Your weekend sounds really fun, and a nice safe way to spend New Years!

My traditions have evolved. In olden days, it was hanging with friends. Then the kids came, and we used to spend New Years Eve watching our home videos from the past year. Then we started getting together with friends that had kids the same age as ours. Now, 2/3rds of my kids have their own plans. Our only tradition that is left is going to our favorite restaurant. We now have to go for lunch instead of dinner now because the kids will be out.

    Happy New Year!!!

  • What an interesting way to ring in the New Year. Life is a bunch of memories and traditions. Our tradition for New Year’s is spending it with friends.

    Happy New Year.

  • Why am I not surprised that you are a “fan of the chatting and meeting new people angle”? :)

We are going to be doing some board games ourselves tonight. Looking forward to it and hoping you and Mr BFS have a great New Year…all of 2011, not just New Year’s Day.

  • Yay for board games! We’re having a marathon of Apples to Apples tonight while we enjoy our bubbly :)

    Have a great New Year!

  • What convention is it?

  • We often play board game too on New Year’s Eve. That and play lots of Wii bowling. And penny ante poker.

Happy New Year, Crystal, to you and Mr. BIFS!

    All the best,

  • Have a wonderful time Crystal! Wish you and your family a very happy 2011!

  • This year, a quiet new years at home — haven’t been feeling great the past couple days, so copious amounts of alcohol is the last thing I need… but looking forward to 2011 either way!

    Happy new year!

  • Nice! A board-game convention is almost on the same level as a Star Trek Convention! hehe almost….

  • @Buck, I did take off a few days sort of…I started a new blog carnival site last Thursday and only kept up with email and the Yakezie forum over the weekend, lol. Oh, and I wrote my update posts for Monday and Tuesday…okay, so maybe I didn’t really take much time off…

@LifeAndMyFinances, the conventions are a blast! I hope you find one nearby!

@DoNotWait, it sounds like you had a great celebration!!! Yay!!!

@Everyday Tips, evolving traditions sounds good to me. As long as you have fun, right? :-)

@krantcents, I hope you all had fun!

    @Joe, I hope you have a great 2011 too!

@Serenity, I love Apples to Apples! Hope you had fun!

@Nicole, it is a convention put together by the game maker, Kevin Nunn – Lonestar Gaming Con. :-)

@Len, I hope you had a ton of fun! I really enjoy Wii Bowling and the Ski Jumping on the Wii Fit, lol. Have a great 2011!

    @MoneyCone, you too!

@twentysomethingmoney, a quiet night in can be exactly what’s needed sometimes. :-) Have a great year!

@Jacob, the only difference between board gaming geeks and Trekkies is that we don’t wear our costumes to the gaming cons, lol. :-)

  • I made it to the convention, for more than one day, too! Mr. BFS and I got in a couple of newer board games late Saturday night.

I managed to trade off two thrift store copies of Acquire for a new-in-shrink Ubongo Extreme, but didn’t manage to unload any of the rest of my sell/trade stuff because I missed the morning of the flea market.

It’s a very social bunch of folks, so I did get in a lot of conversations, too.
