Health Update #3 – Crystal Light Challenge / 10 Pound Challenge Kickoff

This post may contain affiliate links.

As I told you all towards the end of November 2011, I am posting updates twice a month here to keep me accountable for the $1200 a year for fitness that we are spending on Weight Watchers and our gym memberships. Yep, I am using you as my accountability partners whether you signed up for it or not, hahaha. I’m posting on the weekday closest to the 15th and last day of each month. Here is how I did for the past couple of weeks.

PLUS, I joined the 10-pound Challenge hosted by Newlyweds on a Budget. Lose 10 pounds in 12 weeks, win $$$.   Are you in?  I am going for the 10 pounds lost and skipping on the prize since I am sponsoring one of them, lol.

Weight Watchers

I was getting 29 food points a day and 49 weekly points to use as I wished on food each week, so 252 total points. So, I am aiming for 250 food points or less a week from here on out. I have to use a minimum of 182 or I’d be physically starving my body – that wouldn’t be a healthy diet at all. Let’s see how I did:

Week of January 1 – January 7, 2012:

Sunday – 59 points
Monday – 32 points
Tuesday – 32 points
Wednesday – 36 points
Thursday – 26 points
Friday – 28 points
Saturday – 38 points

Total Weekly Points Used: 251 Points – Oops

Week of January 8 – January 14, 2012:

Sunday – 36 points
Monday – 26 points
Tuesday – 30 points
Wednesday – 33 points
Thursday – 34 points
Friday – 35 points
Saturday – 54 points

Total Weekly Points Used: 248 Points – Yay!

Well, one out of two isn’t bad.  And the average of the two works out.  😉

Gym Attendance

I set the goal to go to the gym at least 3 times a week when we signed up. I also have a bowling league Thursday nights and walk the neighborhood once in a while as well, but this is just about my gym attendance. Let’s see how I did.

Week of January 1 – January 7, 2012:

Sunday – Nope
Monday – Racquetball for 40 minutes
Tuesday – Racquetball for 30 minutes
Wednesday – Nope
Thursday – Nope
Friday – Nope
Saturday – Nope

Total Weekly Times at the Gym: 2 times – Oops

Week of January 8 – January 14, 2012:

Sunday – Racquetball for 45 minutes
Monday – Nope
Tuesday – Nope
Wednesday – Nope
Thursday – Racquetball for 30 minutes
Friday – Racquetball for 45 minutes
Saturday – Racquetball for 50 minutes

Total Weekly Times at the Gym: 4 times – Yay!

Again, one out of two isn’t bad and the average works out, hahaha. I’m also getting much better at racquetball!

Weight Goals Update

Other than the diet and exercise goals mentioned above, here was my weight goal as of November 28, 2011:

  • Weigh 135 pounds by December 31st, 2012.

I am currently weighing in at 155.6 pounds, which is exactly where I started November 28, 2011, BUT I am extremely happy since I did get up to 159 over the holidays, so I am definitely working my way down. 🙂

How did you do on your fitness goals?

Lisa – did you join WW?
bogofdebt – how is that last 20 pounds coming along?  I remember December was being a bugger…
Kris – how is your Half Ironman triathlon training coming?  And how was the Disney Marathon?
Cashflowmantra – how is the 2012 weight loss and weight training?
JoshH – how is it coming?
MyMoneyDesign – how is the running?
Newlyweds – has 2012 been kinder?
Crissie – have is the triathlon training?
Jeffrey – how is the Insanity program going?
101 Centavos – did the holidays get you?

  1. This is a great way to find accountability. Keep it up!

I started running for exercise when I was 44 (am 51 now), but let my weight creep up. Back in October (when we got iPhones) I read a blog post at http://www.michaelhyatt.com about an excellent app called LoseIt and started using it, along with MapMyFitness. For me it has been the awareness of portion sizes that did the trick. I have lost 16 lbs since mid October, continue to run, but have a much better sense of portion sizes. I also bought a recumbent exercise bike (with some cool unintended consequences when we moved it to the living room–hey, that’s an idea for a blog post!)

  2. @Thad P, thanks for the app suggestions!

@Jenna, have fun and be safe. 🙂

    @Jen, woot!

@Newlyweds, we also have eaten out almost daily…we are cutting that out if possible…

  3. Hey! This is definitely a great way to hold yourself accountable and keep track of your progress! How are you liking WW so far? Does it seem really hard to stay within the alloted amount of points or not too bad? I’ve always been going with the working out part, but not the eating less part!!

Love the blog and looking forward to keep up with your posts!

    Thanks!

  4. @Samantha, we’ve been on Weight Watchers for more than a year now and it isn’t so bad. It’s a budgeter’s dream and it really knocks portion control into your head. I always suck at it when I go on vacation and around the holidays, but that’s okay too, lol. It was the working out part that I only recently started.

  5. Just wondering why the expense for a gym? One thing that I have found is the cost benefit of walking/running in my neighborhood. I don’t have the added cost of a gym, and I don’t feel guilty when I don’t use what I have already paid for. Plus, there’s the added health benefits of being out in the good sunshine! Of course, when the Texas summer heat is at 110, I still ran, but I sure didn’t like it! The best piece of exercise equipment I ever got was my first iPod Shuffle. Suddenly walking or running was anything but boring!

  6. @Thad, I don’t walk or run or use machines…I play racquetball. And my Ipod Nano makes treadmill or neighborhood walking tolerable, but I still dislike it. I have to play a sport to forget I am exercising. 🙂

  9. Great start to the new year! I love that your workout is playing racquetball – it’s a fun, full body workout that I would think wouldn’t get old the way the treadmill does (my workout of choice is running which is awesome outside and waaaay less cool inside. Unfortunately it’s dark out when I get home this time of year.)

  10. Even though you got 1 out of 2 for each category, I would give yourself a pat on the back and round up to 2 out of 2 for each! You’re showing some good discipline. I love that you’ve found racquetball as your exercise sport so you actually enjoy working out 🙂 keep it up!

  11. Good job! I’m using Weight Watchers Online as well – I do think it’s super great for keeping track of portion sizes. Since getting married I’ve totally struggled with my weight – mainly because my husband is skinny like a stick and all I want to do is feed him! 🙂

But I’ve joined the 10-pound challenge (and the gym!) and am already on my way to losing 🙂 so yay!

PS love your blog, I’ve added you to my RSS feed (from all the way in Australia!).

  12. I started working at losing weight about 2 years ago, and I’m down from 350 or so (I’m a big guy – NFL nose tackle type build) down to 275. I should be about 230 for optimal health. My new fitness try for this year is joining a rock climbing gym and going 2x a week. I’m mixing in lifting sessions too since they have a limited weight room. Right now it’s taking a 1/2 week for my muscles to recover, so I don’t really want to go more frequently. As I get stronger, I want to bump it up to 3x.

  13. I am so behind! I got back from vacation just a few days ago, and have been catching up on everyone’s posts ever since.

The Disney Marathon was awesome!! I so highly recommend it. After taking last week off, this week I was back in the pool, on the bike, and running too. So while I’m easing my way back into training, it feels good to be moving!

I gained a couple of pounds on my vacation, but my eating is back on track, and my goals are set. It looks like you’re staying ton track pretty well too – good to see any holiday weight disappeared quickly!

    Enjoy your trip to LA!
